Hot House Theatre Co. -- BHS -- Spring 2023
Music by Alen Menken, Book by Howard Ashman, Directed by Gary Sessa
Director Gary Sessa gave me the opportunity to design the scenery for his production of Little Shop of Horrors. His vision included widening the range of actors who could play each character and employing advanced scenery, prop-making, and puppetry techniques, which would provide a new outlet for his students. I also got a chance to assist with the puppet making and design process. For more information about the puppet-making process, please contact me.
While standard drawings (Floorplans, painters elevations, and perspective renderings) are necessary for communication between the technical teams, I find myself regularly gravitating towards a scale model for central communication. I have found that something tactile works best with the minds of most creatives I have worked with, and allows us to speak coherently and specifically about a design as a team. You will see an abundance of scale models throughout my portfolio because of this central philosophy.
Since this design process, I have endeavored to gain more experience in virtual 3D modeling. This seems like a good alternative to a physical model in the age of Zoom meetings and remote designers; however, I have yet to put this communication method into practice with one of my own designs.
